I saw it Friday. It didn't suck. I'd give it about 3 or 4 stars out of 5. That is, I'd recommend it to most everyone. My biggest gripe is they played around with the plot a bit much, although they kept a healthy portion of the jokes and dialogue, at least as far as adapting it from a book goes. So, on the one hand, it introduces a standard escape-from-the-villains/ find-the-mcguffin-first plot that wasn't present in the original novel, which I consider to be the best SF novel ever (stong candidate for best novel in the English language ever, but I think I'll give Moby Dick a chance before I declare Douglas Adams the best writer ever).
On the other hand, the movie is a perfectly adequate romantic comedy with a SF framework, that happens to have some of the best dialogue ever (Adams's own; the dialogue specifically written for the movie is eh- okay).

While the movie diverged from the book in many aspects, so did the radio show and television series and comic book. This isn't just another case of Hollywood screwing with the book, the story is just capable of being told in many different ways. I'd have to say that it's quite true to the spirit. Don't go in there expecting some sort of "in jokes" or thinking you'd need to have read the book. There really isn't some creaping under story, or atleast not one you can't grasp without reading the book.

This is something I added to the end of the review when I was x-posting it to bolt's movie review boards: The plot is also more upbeat than it needs to be. The tone of the book actually was sort of dark but funny. The Earth blows up and it's a great tragedy because
The Earth is a giant computer that is central in trying to find out the meaning of life. It was five minutes from completing its program when it was blown up.
I suppose I should mention the effects: my assesment would be perfectly adequate to the task although sometimes goofier than they need to be, but it's not the new Matrix and I doubt anyone is going to be saying: I want my movie to look like that.

Sorry to edit the post, but there are far better ways to cover up spoilers. The best method I've found is to change the color to mimic the background color. For future refrence, that background color is d4d4d4. This way your post isn't overly large, you can say stuff after it which people will read, and people simply need to highlight your message to read the text if they want to.
