I am reading his book "The Hobbit" and am finding it hard to get interested in. Are all his books written like this or do they start out slow and then pick up momentum?

Tis okay luv. I'm still trying to get into this book. I read like three or four pages and then I have to stop and try to take in what I just read.

Here's a tip for when reading a hard or wordy book. Go pick up a copy of Ernest Hemingway's "For Whom the Bells Toll" and read the first 100 pages while trying to make sense of it. Then go back and read whatever book was giving you a hard time (I am not implying lack of reading ability here) or that was hard to get into because of the style. After reading "FWtBT", whatever you were reading beforehand will seem much simpler. ;D Worked for me, so mayhaps it will do the same for you.

I encountered the same difficulty with the Hobbit. Here's some advice. Give it a month or two, reading other stuff in the middle. Then go back and start the Hobbit over. Maybe you'll get more into it the second time around. Also, the others I think are much easier to get into if you have read the Hobbit. It's a really good story, you should try to read it if you can.

Although I only got 3/4 of the way through it before I set it aside and forgot to pick it up again, I thought it was a good, solid adventure yarn compared to Fellowship, which I got about halfway through.
I still prefer Terry Pratchett and Robert E. howard over Tolkein.

I don't know Howard, but i don't think you can compare Pratchett to Tolkein. They are two completely different styles of writing. The only thing that makes them even somewhat related is that Discworld is a fantasy world. So while you may like him more, it's unfair to judge Tolkein against him.

Well I finally got through the book. I must say I was suprised. Halfway through the book it started to pick up, and by the end I found I couldn't put it down. Now I'm reading The Fellowship of the Ring, and I find I like it better, maybe because I've seen the movie, but the reading is going easier than it did in The Hobbit. Amazing how many years it took him to write those books!!
